Introduction
South Texas wasn’t originally high on our road trip bucket list.
We were simply looking for warmer weather, a beautiful coastline, and a place to slow down for a few days after spending months exploring the mountains.
Four days later, we left wondering why more people don’t talk about Padre Island.
Between miles of drivable beaches, incredible seafood, unforgettable sunsets, beach camping, wildlife, and some of the friendliest people we’ve met on the road, it quickly became one of our favorite coastal destinations in the country.

One of the biggest highlights is simply being able to drive directly onto the beach.
Miles of coastline are accessible by vehicle, allowing you to find your own quiet stretch of sand instead of competing for space near a parking lot.
For anyone who loves photography, camping, fishing, surfing, vanlife, or simply spending time outside, it’s an incredible experience.
Our Favorite Part: Driving on the Beach
Driving directly on the beach was easily one of our favorite parts of the trip.
Being able to pull the van onto the sand, open the doors, make coffee while listening to the waves, and spend the day without ever leaving the beach felt like exactly what coastal travel should be.
It also comes with an important lesson.
Air down your tires.
Seriously.
We learned this the hard way.
Despite having a capable van, we managed to get stuck twice because we didn’t lower our tire pressure enough before driving onto the softer sand.
Fortunately, the beach community here is incredible.
Within minutes, complete strangers stopped what they were doing to help us recover the van.
It reminded us why we love traveling so much.

Stay Away From the Waterline
Another important tip is to avoid driving close to the water.
While the wet sand often looks firm, tides and changing conditions can quickly turn it into a trap.
Every year vehicles become stuck after venturing too close to the surf, and recovering them isn’t always easy.
Give yourself plenty of room above the high tide line.
You’ll enjoy your day much more without wondering if the ocean is slowly claiming your vehicle.
Vanlife Paradise
If you’re traveling in a camper van, RV, truck camper, or overlanding rig, Padre Island is one of the coolest places we’ve visited.
Beach camping here is unforgettable.
Falling asleep to waves and waking up to sunrise over the Gulf is something every road trip enthusiast should experience at least once.
The ability to camp directly on the beach makes this one of the most unique vanlife destinations in the United States.
Just remember to come prepared.
Cell service can become limited depending on where you camp, and the sand can be surprisingly soft.
A little preparation goes a long way.
The Food Was Better Than We Expected
One thing we absolutely weren’t expecting was how incredible the food scene would be.
Fresh seafood is obviously a highlight, but almost every meal exceeded our expectations.
Snoopy’s Pier
This ended up being one of our favorite meals of the trip.
The tacos were fantastic.
The clam chowder was even better.
Sitting outside overlooking the water while eating fresh seafood made it one of those meals we’ll remember long after the trip ended.
If you only have time for one casual waterfront restaurant, this would be my recommendation.
Black Diamond Oyster Bar
If you’re a seafood fan, don’t skip this place.
The oysters were outstanding.
The fish and chips were some of the best we’ve had anywhere.
Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and the atmosphere perfectly matched the coastal vibe of Corpus Christi.

One attraction that surprised us was the USS Lexington.
Even if you’re not a huge military history fan, it’s worth spending a few hours exploring.
Walking through the aircraft carrier gives you an incredible appreciation for its size and history.
There are exhibits throughout the ship, aircraft displayed on the flight deck, and plenty of interactive experiences.
Plan on spending roughly half a day here if you want to see everything.
It’s one of the most unique attractions in Corpus Christi.

Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are probably the sweet spot.
Temperatures are warm without being overwhelming, and the beaches tend to feel less crowded.
Summer offers classic beach weather but also brings more visitors and hotter temperatures.
Winter can actually be a fantastic time for travelers looking to escape colder climates elsewhere in the country.
