Vanlife in Summit County Colorado | Early Season Snowboarding at Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain

If you are looking for what early winter in Summit County Colorado actually feels like, this week pretty much sums it up.

We spent seven straight days living out of our van in Summit County, rotating between Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain, mixing in trail runs around Dillon and Silverthorne, and experiencing one of the most unexpected moments we have ever had in Colorado. Seeing the Northern Lights over the Rocky Mountains.

Even with a slower start to the snow season, this was one of our favorite weeks in Colorado.

Early Season Snowboarding at Arapahoe Basin Colorado

We spent most of our time riding at Arapahoe Basin, located just outside Keystone and right along the Continental Divide.

A Basin is known for opening early, and it is one of the best places in Colorado to get those first turns of the season.

Early season here is simple but fun.

  • Limited terrain but consistent snow

  • Fewer crowds compared to peak season

  • Easy laps with incredible mountain views

There is something about riding A Basin in November that just hits differently. It is less about conditions and more about being back on snow.

Riding Copper Mountain in Early Season

We also spent time at Copper Mountain, just a short drive from Frisco and Dillon in Summit County.

Copper offers a slightly different early season experience, with a naturally divided layout that spreads riders out across beginner, intermediate, and advanced terrain.

If you are visiting Summit County early in the season, rotating between A Basin and Copper Mountain is one of the best ways to maximize your time on snow.

Northern Lights in Summit County Colorado

The biggest surprise of the week had nothing to do with snowboarding.

We saw the Northern Lights in Summit County.

On a clear night near Dillon and Silverthorne, the sky lit up with soft greens and pinks moving across the horizon. It is something you rarely expect to see in Colorado, but when conditions line up, it can happen.

Watching the Aurora Borealis above the Rocky Mountains was easily one of the most memorable moments we have had on the road.

If you are in Summit County during strong solar activity, it is worth getting away from town lights and looking up.

Trail Running Around Dillon and Silverthorne

Even with early snow building in the high country, there are still plenty of opportunities to get outside beyond skiing.

We spent time running trails around:

  • Dillon Dam Road near Lake Dillon

  • Willow Brook Trailhead in Silverthorne

  • Local paths connecting Frisco, Dillon, and surrounding areas

These areas offer a mix of paved and dirt trails with views of the Tenmile Range and Gore Range. Early winter conditions can vary, but that is part of the experience.

Cold mornings, light snow, and quiet trails make it a great time to explore.

Vanlife in Summit County Colorado

Summit County is one of the best places in Colorado for vanlife, especially in early winter.

You have access to:

  • Multiple ski resorts within a short drive

  • Towns like Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne for supplies and food

  • Trail systems and outdoor access in every direction

  • Gyms, coffee shops, and places to work remotely

Living out of the van here in November feels calm and manageable. The crowds have not fully arrived yet, and there are still plenty of quiet places to park and reset.

Daily Life in a Colorado Vanlife Setup

This week was not about chasing a packed itinerary. It was about settling into a rhythm.

Mornings started with coffee and frost on the windows
Days were spent riding at Arapahoe Basin or Copper Mountain
Afternoons included trail runs or time in town
Evenings were about warming up and finding a quiet place to park

It is a slower pace, but one that feels sustainable.

Why Visit Summit County Colorado in Early Winter

A lot of people wait until peak winter to visit Summit County, but early season has its own advantages.

Less crowded lift lines at A Basin and Copper Mountain
Easier parking and access in Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne
More flexibility for vanlife and travel
A chance to ease into the season before peak crowds

It may not be peak conditions, but it is a great time to experience the area.

Final Thoughts

This week in Summit County Colorado was a reminder that you do not need perfect conditions to have an incredible experience.

Between early season snowboarding, trail running around Dillon and Silverthorne, quiet vanlife moments, and seeing the Northern Lights over the Rockies, it ended up being one of the most memorable weeks of the trip.

If you are planning a Colorado winter trip or considering vanlife in Summit County, this is a great place to start.
