Why Sandpoint in Winter?
Sandpoint truly shines in the winter months. While many travelers flock to bigger name ski towns, Sandpoint offers a quieter, more relaxed mountain experience without sacrificing terrain, views, or character.
Winter brings consistent snowfall to Schweitzer Mountain, cozy small town vibes in Sandpoint, and far fewer crowds than you will find at major destination resorts. The combination of lake views, forested mountains, and historic downtown streets makes Sandpoint feel scenic and inviting, even on cold days.
Ikon Pass Details
Ikon Pass holders receive limited access to Schweitzer Mountain each season, typically allowing up to seven days of skiing or riding with no blackout dates, while Ikon Base Pass holders usually get up to five days of access with some blackout dates. Additionally, Ikon Pass holders can redeem Mountain Credits for food, beverage, and retail perks on mountain at select locations like Sky House, Lakeview Cafe, and gear shops when visiting Schweitzer.
Schweitzer Mountain Ski Areas on Ikon Pass
Schweitzer Mountain is divided into several distinct areas, each offering a different skiing experience.
The Front Side is anchored by lifts like Musical Chairs, Great Escape Quad, and Basin Express, and features wide groomers, beginner and intermediate terrain, and easy access to the village. This area is ideal for warm up laps and relaxed cruising.
The Outback Bowl, accessed primarily via the Outback Express and Stella Quad, is known for quieter slopes, excellent tree skiing, and a more remote feel. The Great Escape Quad serves as a key connector between the front side and the Outback, offering long scenic runs.
For more advanced terrain, the upper mountain accessed by Basin Express and Stella Quad delivers steeper lines, chutes, and some of the best views of Lake Pend Oreille from the summit. Together, these lift zones make Schweitzer feel expansive while still remaining easy to navigate for a wide range of ability levels.

Packing List
Winters around Sandpoint and Schweitzer Mountain in the Inland Pacific Northwest are cold, snowy, and scenic, with temperatures often ranging from the low 20s to low 30s°F in the core winter months and plenty of fresh snow on the slopes. Sandpoint itself gets around 60 inches of snow annually, with snowfall occurring most often from November through April, and towns and the mountain both seeing regular snow cover through the season. Since it’s the Pacific Northwest, bring waterproof layers!
Winter days tend to be more cloudy and snowy than sunny, especially in December and January when average sunshine is lower, but there are still plenty of crisp, bluebird days that make for unforgettable ski views over Lake Pend Oreille. Sandpoint overall averages roughly 175 sunny days a year, meaning winter brings a mix of snowy, overcast periods and clear, bright days that highlight the mountain scenery.
